The design of the class 132 was derived from experience with the class130 and 131. The DR purchased 709 of the optimised locomotives with electric heating from the Voroshilovgrad Locomotive Works in the Soviet Union. The top speed was set at 120 km/h, the power of the versatile machine was 3,000 hp.
