Wickham of Ware produced a range of lightweight trolleys typically used by permanent way gangs for track maintenance. The type 27 was in production between 1949 and 1980 and over 600 were built and supplied to many countries in narrow, standard and broad gauges. Mechanically the engine and transmission was usually based on automotive components, which when coupled to a reversing final drive allowed speeds of up to 30mph in either direction. Although they were limited to 25 mph on plain line and 15 mph on points. Travelling backwards for any amount of time was not practical due to the forward facing seats and controls. To get around this the trolleys carried a turntable with them, usually mounted on the rear of the trolley above the petrol filler cap. To move materials to site, the trolleys coule be coupled to trailers of various designs.
